eBook formats – what’s the difference?

Fons Vitae offers eBooks in two formats. They each have their advantages and drawbacks.

PDF:
Advantages: very popular format, can be opened on any computer or smartphone.

Drawbacks: PDF files are digital copies of the printed book. On many computer screens it can be awkward to read a long book because the text does not adapt itself to the size and orientation of the screen. Instead, the reader has to scroll this way and that, and find a compromise between text size and scrolling.

Reflowable EPUB:
Advantages: If you have a Kindle eReader or have used one, you know the advantages of the EPUB format. The text adjusts to the shape and size of the screen, and the text can be easily made larger or smaller, or even changed to a different font. In addition, footnotes or endnotes can be clicked on, and there is a table of contents built into the eReader software so the reader can easily navigate around the book. There are many free EPUB reading apps available for smartphones, tablets, iPads and laptops.

Drawbacks: The Reflowable EPUB format is not at all suitable for illustrated books, where it is essential that the pages be reproduced exactly as they appear in the printed book. A second drawback is that ePUB files are more labor-intensive to create, and therefore we haven’t converted as many of our books to the ePUB format yet.
